The Key Figures of the Battle
|
Friedrich PaulusFriedrich Paulus was the general of the 6th German Army. He had risen through the ranks quite quickly, and had only been promoted to general at the end of 1941. He was the main general in charge during the Battle of Stalingrad but most of the plan utilized was Hitler's, not his. In the battle, he led 250,000 men, 500 tanks, 7,000 guns and mortars, and 25,000 horses. His major action during the battle was his decision to finally surrender, despite the fact that Hitler had ordered him to keep fighting no matter what.

Georgy Zhukov
General Zhukov was the most successful Russian general during the war. He did not lose a single battle, and was in charge of the attack on Berlin at the very end. He was very tactically minded, and was especially good at employing the use of armored vehicles in combat. One of his greatest triumphs came in the Battle of Stalingrad, because he arrived in time to surround the Germans in the city and trap them, leading to the eventual Soviet Victory. He would be demoted by Stalin after the war, in order to keep him from becoming too powerful within the country.
